Light Installation
A three-story tall, sound-reactive lighting installation. This sculpture is installed in the Hunt Library building in Pittsburgh. Incandescent bulbs are suspended by steel cable and acrylic structures in the empty stairwell core. A microphone reacts to ambient noise, such as footsteps, doors, and voices, to create smooth abstract light patterns in the space.
We chose our materials to reflect the feeling of the building and the stairwell space. The steel cables, cement base, and silver wiring all echo their monotone surroundings. The incandescent bulbs create a warm contrast against this, and the organically changing light patterns add life. The piece makes use of the vertical core in the stairwell to highlight the university's IDEATE program in the basement of the library.
