wizard chess

A magical chess set, whose pieces move themselves at your voice command.

We created this project for Build18, a week-long hackathon at CMU. Underneath the chess board, a custom-built gantry carries an electromagnet to move the chess pieces above. A microphone and Raspberry Pi listen for voice commands.

I designed and 3D printed each piece in detail, following the 12th century Isle of Lewis chess set that was used in the Harry Potter movie. The board is laser engraved birch ply. The gantry assembly was printed from PLA. A video of the internals is here.
